Description
The Grayton Dunes are a scenic section of Florida’s Gulf Coast dune system located around Grayton Beach State Park in Walton County. Known for their striking white sand, rare coastal dune lakes, and protected natural habitats, these dunes offer visitors a glimpse of what Florida’s Emerald Coast looked like before large-scale coastal development transformed much of the shoreline.
Formed from fine quartz sand carried south from the Appalachian Mountains over thousands of years, the dunes rise between the Gulf of Mexico and the inland forests, wetlands, and lakes that characterize the region. Wind and weather continually reshape the landscape, creating rolling dune ridges covered with native grasses and coastal vegetation that help stabilize the sand and protect the shoreline from erosion.
One of the defining features of the Grayton Dunes is their connection to the area’s coastal dune lakes. Among the most prominent is Western Lake, one of the largest and most well-known coastal dune lakes in Florida. These rare lakes are found in only a few places worldwide and create a unique environment where freshwater and saltwater ecosystems interact. The result is an exceptionally diverse habitat that supports fish, wading birds, shorebirds, turtles, and a wide variety of native plant life.
Visitors can explore the Grayton Dunes through a network of trails that wind through dunes, pine flatwoods, and coastal scrub habitats. Elevated viewpoints along the trails provide excellent opportunities to appreciate the contrast between the brilliant white sand, emerald waters of the Gulf, and the dark waters of the dune lakes. Wildlife viewing, photography, hiking, paddling, and beach recreation are among the area’s most popular activities.
Unlike many heavily developed stretches of Florida’s coastline, much of the Grayton Dunes area remains protected within Grayton Beach State Park. This preservation effort helps maintain the natural character of the dunes and provides important habitat for native species while allowing visitors to experience one of the most beautiful and ecologically significant coastal environments in the state.
Today, the Grayton Dunes stand as one of the premier examples of Florida’s coastal dune ecosystems, combining pristine beaches, rare dune lakes, and protected natural landscapes into a destination that showcases the unique beauty of Walton County’s shoreline.
