Simply doing a search for a sand dune online and using the available information to determine the square mileage of the dune area leads to inaccurate data because generally the dune is part of a larger state or national park and you tend to get information about the total acres or square miles that make up the full protected area and not just the sand dune. To arrive at an accurate number for this directory and website we use a software program that allows us to map the area around the dunes specifically and measure the square mileage of the dunes specifically. It isn't a perfect science when you are doing this based on satellite imagery but its pretty dang close and certainly accurate enough for our purposes.
